Lone Star College-North Harris student, Willicia Toran was recently awarded a $1,000 scholarship from the LSC-Foundation for her submission to the 18th annual Student Essay Challenge.
Toran, a single mother of two, was honored at the Chancellor’s Breakfast and read her essay to the Lone Star College System supporters and administration in attendance. In the essay, she details her determination to succeed and set an example for her sons.
“Not only did I want to better myself, but I wanted to shape the lives of two young men I had to raise. I wanted to be a great mother, a strong provider, and a major role model for my sons just as my parents had been for me. I never gave up on my dream to become a nurse and even though I was intimidated by the work and sacrifice it would take to make it happen, I felt it was time to challenge myself,” wrote Toran.
Toran, currently works full-time as a Licensed Vocational Nurse while also attending classes at LSC-North Harris. She will graduate from the Associate Degree Nursing Program in May.
“Willicia is a wonderful example of the many dedicated students we have attending LSC-North Harris. Despite the hurdles and sacrifices required, she is working hard to improve her life through education,” said Dr. Steve Head, LSC-North Harris president.
