Lone Star College-Montgomery’s Writers in Performance series continues its fall 2010 line-up with a reading by award-winning author Scott Blackwood, on Thursday, November 18, at 7 p.m., in the LSC-Montgomery library (Building F). The evening, which is free and open to the public, will include a reception and book signing.
Blackwood’s most recent novel, We Agreed to Just Meet Here (New Issues, 2009), won the Associated Writing Program’s Prize for the Novel and the Texas Institute of Letter’s Jesse Jones Award for Best Fiction.
In addition, his award-winning collection of stories entitled In the Shadow of Our House (SMU Press, 2001) was named a best story collection by Forward Magazine and a best Texas fiction book by the San Antonio Express-News. Pieces of his short fiction collection have also appeared in the Gettysburg Review, American Short Fiction, The Boston Review, The Southwest Review, and Other Voices.
This accomplished author has been nominated twice for the Pushcart Prize. He has also won a Dobie-Paisano Literary Fellowship and two Texas Commission on the Arts Fellowships.
Blackwood holds a master’s of fine arts degree in creative writing from Texas State University. Currently, he is the director of the MFA creative writing program at Roosevelt University in Chicago.
The goal of the Writers in Performance series is to bring thought-provoking literature and cultural diversity to the campus of LSC-Montgomery and the surrounding community. The series’ events are made possible by the partnership between the Montgomery County Literary Arts Council, LSC-Montgomery Library, the Conroe Commission on the Arts and Culture, Good Books in the Woods, LSC-Montgomery’s Academy for Lifelong Learning, and SWIRL, LSC-Montgomery’s magazine of student art and writing.
