Bring the entire family for an evening of laughs with Lone Star College-CyFair Lyric Opera’s performance of “The Mikado” set Nov. 18 through Nov. 20.
“Join us for one of the most popular of W.S. Gilbert and Sir Arthur Sullivan’s collaborations which has been has been entertaining audiences worldwide for more than a century, and is possibly the most popular light opera of all time,” said Alex Qian, LSC-CyFair’s music director.
Set in a fictional town of Titipu, Japan, “The Mikado” follows Yum-Yum and Nanki-Poo, two young lovers who keep finding the laws of the Mikado in the way of their wedded bliss.
Add into the mix Yum-Yum’s guardian, Ko-Ko, the town’s awkward but well-meaning tailor-turned-executioner, and Pooh-Bah, the snobbiest nobleman one will ever meet (who also happens to hold every civil position in town, from Groom of the Back Stairs to Archbishop.) Then when the Mikado himself decides to visit the town of Titipu, it’s a topsy-turvy recipe for calamity and laughs.
A special free sneak preview of “The Mikado” will be held 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 10 in the Recital Hall (room 102) in the Center for the Arts building at 9191 Barker Cypress. Light refreshments will be served.
