Lone Star College-North Harris and the college’s Latin American Student Organization (LASO) will host “Dia de la Familia” on Saturday, Oct. 16 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. This college preparatory event is designed for Spanish-speaking families in need of information and guidance about attending college.
Dr. Laura G. Murillo, president & CEO of the Houston Hispanic Chamber of Commerce will serve as one of the keynote speakers for the event, which will provide information on a variety of topics critical to first-generation college students.
“Dia de la Familia," will be presented in Spanish and will feature information in three main areas: immigration, Latina issues and financial aid. During the event, an immigration lawyer will discuss the issues that undocumented students face at the front end of applying for college. In addition, presentations will stress the important role parents play when their child is applying for college, and explain the financial aid and IRS requirements needed for students to apply and receive grants or scholarships for college.
All events are free and open to the community and refreshments will be served. Activities for small children will be available while parents and older siblings are participating in the event. A fajita dinner will also be served to participants at the close of the event.
