Lone Star College-CyFair excels in more than academics as Kim Zandwyk and her Food Services department recently proved with a national Bronze Loyal E. Horton Dining Award.
“We are so excited about The National Association of College & University Food Services (NACUFS) award,” said Zandwyk, who has been Director of Food Services since LSC-CyFair opened in 2003. “I thought we were a very small school and that no one knew about us, but this recognition shows we’re known.”
Zandwyk entered LSC-CyFair’s Catering Guide to compete against colleges and universities nationwide and won third behind Ohio’s Ashland University and California’s Azusa Pacific University in the Medium School Category for Catering – Standard Menu for Catering Guide and Catering Processes.
The NACUFS judging criteria included: menu selection, merchandising and presentation, marketing and overall impression. Total Annual Foodservice Revenue and Total Student Enrollment determined classification as small, medium or large in different categories, such as catering, residential dining and retail sales. The official awards presentation will be held in July.
The LSC-CyFair Catering Guide offers a variety of options for campus and community event organizers from breakfast to box lunches and a la carte to buffets as well as from sweets and snacks to parties and receptions. To taste some of the menu items, try a snack or meal at the Lakeside Café in the College Center or Cyber Café in the library on the Barker Cypress campus.
Zandwyk, a graduate of The Art Institute of Houston, Culinary Arts with 15 years experience in the catering industry, said the catering guide and the catering processes in place are also used at LSC-Tomball, where Gilda Foster is Director of Food Services. Prior to bringing her talents to LSC-CyFair, she worked at one of Houston’s top caterers as did her Catering Supervisor Jay Warren.
