See the real impact of drinking and driving—without drinking or driving—through a DUI simulator, coming to Lone Star College-Montgomery on Wednesday, March 10, from 9 a.m.-3 p.m., outside of Building A.
The college’s Psychology Club and Psi Beta have arranged to have P.E.E.R.S. Awareness bring in a virtual reality car in order to show students how drinking affects their ability to drive. P.E.E.R.S. Awareness, which stands for Professionals Encouraging Education Reform Standards, has created this car to emulate real-road driving conditions.
According to Karen Buckman, professor of psychology at LSC-Montgomery, students get into the car, put on a pair of visual reality goggles, and experience hands-on how bad drinking and driving can be.
“Students pretend to drive the car, while the audience around them can see what the driver is seeing,” said Buckman. “The virtual reality goggles make it look like they are driving sober, then show what it looks like after two drinks, four drinks, and so on.”
Buckman said that up to 30 people can drive the simulator every hour. There is no cost to participate.
More information about the consequences of drinking and driving will be in The Commons (Bldg. A), including video of real-life crashes caused by drinking and driving and a Dedication Station, where students can pledge to never drink and drive.
