Attending its second competition in two weeks, the LSC-Tomball Debate club competed in the Bayou Swing forensics tournament co-hosted by LSC-North Harris and LSC-Kingwood October 16-18. The college was represented by Caleb Loomis, Allison Altman, Lauren Caldwell, and Erik Robinson. The event attracted debate teams from McNeese State University, University of Houston, Houston Baptist University, Texas State University, University of the Southwest, San Jacinto College North, Wiley College, and LSC-Kingwood.
Competitors considered topics from current events, philosophy, history, economics, and political science. Teams learn the topic or “resolution” for the round just 20 minutes in advance of each round of debate. In the parliamentary format, teams are required to argue half of the six preliminary rounds for the “government” side and half on the “opposition” side. No prepared evidence is permitted in the round and each participant must respond to cross examination during one of their speeches.
