LSC-Montgomery Invites All Fall 2009 Students to Fun-Filled and Informative Orientation

Attention Lone Star College-Montgomery students! Lone Star Premiere, the campus’s reality-show-themed new student orientation, is set for Friday, August 21, 2009 from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. All students new to the campus for fall 2009–as well as parents, family, and even returning students–are invited to attend this free event.

“Lone Star Premiere is a high-energy, memorable day,” said Joseph Maurer, program manager for student activities. “It gives students the opportunity to learn all about the campus so they feel ready to jump in and get things started as soon as classes begin.”

With the theme “College: The Ultimate Reality Show,” LSC-Montgomery faculty and staff will present students and their guests with campus and college information in a light-hearted, energizing atmosphere based on popular reality television shows.

The program begins in the college’s theatre (Building D) with the “Extreme Makeover” opening session, featuring guest speaker Stephen Gray. Gray will talk about how to succeed in college, including thinking outside the box, stepping outside your comfort zone, and creating your own opportunities.

Other sessions include “The Amazing Race” (campus tours with a kick!), “Are You Smarter Than…Your College Student” (parent and family orientation), an information fair, a Top Chef Quick-Fire Ice Cream Challenge, and “Lone Star’s Got Talent” (student-provided entertainment and karaoke).

During the information fair, representatives from around campus will be available to answer any questions about the college and the services offered, including student activities, student organizations, testing, advising, counseling, financial aid, wellness, and more. There will also be time provided for students to get their LSC-Montgomery student identification cards.

Lunch will be provided for students and their guests, and door prize drawings will occur throughout the day, including a grand prize giveaway of a $150 gift card to one lucky student.

Lone Star Premiere is “not your typical orientation,” according to Maurer.

“For the past few years, we’ve gotten really positive feedback from participants,” said Maurer. “We’ve actually had students participate again because they got so much from the program.”
