All Lone Star College-Montgomery students attending college for the first time in the fall 2009 semester now have an extra opportunity to prepare for their very first semester in college.
Starting, Wednesday, July 8, 2009, LSC-Montgomery will offer a three-hour new student orientation program, available to students--and their parents--twice a week on Monday mornings from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. or Wednesday evenings from 5 to 8 p.m. until August 17.
Each session will include a question-and-answer panel with current students, a meet-and-greet session with faculty who will share on the realities and responsibilities of taking college-level courses, and a tour of the campus. Advising, registration, and tuition topics will also be addressed.
“This is a great chance for students to get their individual questions answered, learn their way around campus, and even register for classes,” said Kathryn Lee, orientation program manager at LSC-Montgomery. “The program is meant to ease the student’s transition into college and prepare them for academic, social, and personal success.”
All students interested in attending a new student orientation session are required to complete their college admission packet and placement testing or submit any transcripts with previous college work prior to session registration.
Each session is free, but students should pre-register for a specific date and time, as space is limited. Student can pre-register for a session up until the day before the session is scheduled to take place. All sessions are held at the LSC-Montgomery campus.
“These new student orientation sessions are not mandatory, but were added as part of the college’s Achieving the Dream (AtD) initiative to help students be more successful,” explained Lee. “They are meant to supplement what is already being offered on campus for new students such as the college’s traditional new student orientation, Lone Star Premiere.”
Lone Star Premiere is “not your typical orientation” according to Joseph Maurer, event coordinator and program manager of student activities. The one-day event held on Friday, August 21, from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. presents students with campus and college information in a light-hearted, energizing, fun atmosphere.
The theme “College: The Ultimate Reality Show,” is used throughout the entire event featuring reality TV-themed activities such as The Amazing Race (campus tours), Are You Smarter Than…Your College Student (parent orientation) Lone Star’s Got Talent (student-provided entertainment) and more.
