HOUSTON (Feb. 25, 2025) – More than 500 high school students and advisors converged on Lone Star College-University Park (LSC-University Park) this past Saturday, Feb. 22, for the Texas Public Service Teacher Association (TXPSTA) High School First Responders State Competition. Marking its second consecutive year as host, LSC-University Park welcomed the next generation of public safety professionals—including aspiring emergency medical technicians, law enforcement officers, firefighters, legal professionals, and corrections officers—for a day of rigorous competition and hands-on learning.
Thirty-one schools participated, including Klein Cain and Klein Oak High Schools from Klein ISD, Grand Oaks High School from Conroe ISD, Carl Wunsche Sr. Academy from Spring ISD, and Huntsville High School from Huntsville ISD. Students first competed in regional competitions across the state to earn a spot at the state-level event.
Frank Rios, president of TXPSTA, emphasized the significance of the event in shaping future public servants. "This competition is more than just an event—it’s an opportunity for students to test their skills, build confidence, and gain experience that will help shape their futures," Rios said. "Seeing their dedication and determination in action is truly inspiring."
Numerous Lone Star College departments and local first responder agencies, including LSC Police, LSC Office of General Counsel, Texas Department of Public Safety, Harris County Constable Precinct 4, Klein ISD Police Department, Klein Fire Department, Spring Fire Department, the Harris County Forensic Training Institute, Kerr Law Firm and other law enforcement agencies volunteered as mentors and judges, offering students valuable industry insights.
LSC-University Park Vice President of Administrative Services Brian Griffin praised the event’s impact on both students and the community. "Hosting this competition is a privilege for LSC-University Park," Griffin said. "These students are the future of public safety, and we are proud to provide a space where they can sharpen their skills and gain real-world experience. The dedication of the participants, educators, and volunteers truly reflects the strength of our community."
The competition is organized by TXPSTA, a non-profit organization dedicated to training high school teachers of law and public service. TXPSTA’s mission is to educate and support the next generation of public servants by providing high-quality instruction and hands-on training opportunities. Through regional competitions and the state competition, TXPSTA helps students refine their skills and prepare for careers that serve and protect communities.
