Comcast invests in Lone Star College students’ futures

Lone Star College Foundation and Comcast have partnered to ensure LSC students in Montgomery County have the technology and digital literacy needed to succeed in the classroom. The collaboration provides over $100,000 in equipment for students attending LSC-Kingwood and LSC-Montgomery.

“Lone Star College Foundation is excited to work with Comcast to help Lone Star College students receive the equipment and education needed to compete in an increasingly technology and digital-savvy world,” said Nicole Robinson Gauthier, CFRE, LSC Foundation executive director.

This partnership comes as Comcast expands its Xfinity network into Montgomery and Kingwood, bringing residents access to various services, including high-speed internet, cable television and phone services. This expansion aims to provide residents with greater connectivity and entertainment options.

“At Comcast, we know that technology is the foundation for success in the digital economy,” said Misha McClure, Director of External Affairs, Comcast Texas. “We are thrilled to help students who experience financial barriers have the full benefits of technology and wish these students all the success in the world.”

Comcast donated 100 Dell laptops to LSC Foundation to support LSC-Kingwood students pursuing a technology-related certificate or degree and are income-constrained. These computers will help students like Destiny Spearman complete their education without the financial burden of purchasing a device. Additionally, students can keep the laptop once they leave LSC, potentially using it to further their college education or enter the workforce.

“Receiving a laptop from Comcast has provided me the resources I need for my design classes,” said Destiny Spearman, LSC-Kingwood student, registered student organization specialist and graphic designer. “The new computer allowed me to download the software I needed to make my academic career easier. Before, I did a lot of designing on a tablet.”

Comcast donated a $50,000 grant to the LSC Foundation to start “Maverick Minds,” a student-led podcast at LSC-Montgomery that will create a relatable space for students to learn about campus resources and student life, emphasizing digital literacy. “Maverick Minds” will have a dedicated podcast room in LSC-Montgomery’s marketing suite (Building E) and in the library (Building F) for students interested in learning about podcasting.
