The Leave a Legacy summit hosted by the Mi Familia, Mi Futuro grant program, certainly lived up to its name.
Nearly 200 people attended the community event, which took place Saturday, November 9th.
Numerous workshops were available for visitors to learn more about community resources, including sessions with Lone Star College-Kingwood departments and local organizations and businesses.
Lone Star College Chancellor Mario Castillo was one of the guest speakers. He reflected on the legacy his family passed down to him.
“My family bequeathed me my capacity for hard work, and my parents gave me the courage to want more than what I had. More so than a simple material legacy, these lessons have allowed me to successfully pursue my ambitions and encourage others to do so as well through my work.”
“I really enjoyed the outreach events and seeing our president and chancellor connect with first-gen communities,” shared Engineering Professor Jamie Turner. “The one-on-one approach felt more meaningful and engaging than big events. This experience also inspired me to start using translated materials for future recruitment.”
Other speakers included campus President Dr. Melissa Gonzalez and Imee Villarreal, Manager of Mi Familia, Mi Futuro.
“Seeing our Leave a Legacy Summit come to life was incredibly rewarding,” remarked Villarreal. “The message that everyone is welcome at LSC-Kingwood was loud and clear, echoed powerfully by both our President and our Chancellor. Their words inspired attendees, making them feel valued and capable of pursuing their own dreams while supporting the aspirations of their children.”
The summit was an educational opportunity for visitors, but there was also plenty of entertainment. Community members enjoyed food and were captivated by musical and dance performances from local schools. Musician Sundance Head, who is from Porter, performed for the crowd as well. He was the winner of “The Voice Season 11,” and the son of famous singer, Roy Head.
“My father’s legacy to me was he had told me a long time ago when I was a young man, if I was going to pursue music that it was not going to be fun. And he was right. Like any other art that you might want to pursue in your life, it takes a whole lot to get good at it…I just hope to be remembered as a good guy, a good songwriter, I think that’s more important to me than anything.”
The Leave a Legacy Summit was created in response to a Community & Workforce Needs Assessment conducted earlier this year.
