LSC-Kingwood Fire Academy students showed off their life-saving skills during a demonstration on the campus Wednesday, November 6th.
The students practiced pulling out the hose – hose line evolutions and line carries – as well as fast response drills and rescue techniques.
Chief David Teverbaugh is the Program Director of Fire Science Technology and says the demonstration was a good opportunity to promote the program and have students practice their skills in a live environment.
“What we're trying to do is to show people exactly why we train the way we do. We train these firefighters hard. They work really hard and I'm really proud of this group right here. It's been a really good group.”
Captain Hailey Herrera says her favorite part of the program is the camaraderie of the group.
“I will work up to pull the hose like everyone else can. That's what I need to be able to do. But if I need help, all my other cadets are sitting right behind me and they'll support me all the way through. So it's a very encouraging environment.”
The fire science program usually runs about 32 weeks.
Basically, we're training from the ground up,” explained Class Captain Nathan Russkeller. “Texas is very, very strict about what they want. Most states only want one tier of training. But in Texas, we have to do both tiers one and two. And EMT. So right now, we're in our first tier and this is a culmination of everything that we've learned. After this we’ve still got another full semester. That's when we really start doing our live burns and putting everything together.”
Russkeller says search and rescue is his passion. “That's really what it got me into this. To really help people. And going through those drills, it really shows how hard it is to get to those people. You just got to get in there and get them out.”
“This event was entirely planned by the class,” Chief Teverbaugh shared. “We learned a lot by doing an event like this. I am very proud of every student who participated in this endeavor. We definitely would like to do something similar again.”
