TOMBALL (November 12, 2024) – LSC-Tomball Disability Services (DS) celebrated 20 years of service with a dazzling Roaring 20s Soiree on the evening of November 1. The grand event highlighted the essential support DS provides and the lives they positively impact.
“Tonight was about celebrating the work we do, the students we connect with, and showcasing their gifts, talents, and successes,” said Carolyn Williams, DS Manager for LSC-Tomball and LSC-Creekside Center. “We also took time to remember our students who have transitioned on and honor their families.”
The evening began with a warm welcome from LSC-Tomball President Dr. Lee Ann Nutt and Director of Student Services Robbie Richard Rodgers. The LSC-Tomball Drama Department presented a lighthearted skit, raising awareness of the challenges faced by individuals with disabilities and the importance of informed community support. This was followed by a retrospective presentation of the last 20 years, along with moving testimonials from DS students.
Rodgers read the City of Tomball Proclamation given by Mayor Lori Quinn honoring DS’s 20th anniversary, recognizing both the work DS has done and the work it continues to do. Guests enjoyed a delicious meal and engaged in meaningful discussions on visible and invisible disabilities, disorders, and chronic conditions.
Durell Forte, LSC-Tomball Admissions and Recruitment Coordinator and a former DS student, shared his story with attendees, reflecting on the invaluable accommodations that allowed him to fully participate in his education.
“DS provided the essential support I needed to achieve academic success as a student,” Forte said. “It’s an honor to speak about the important work they do to help every student reach their full potential and beyond.”
All of the evening’s specially curated speakers, presentations, and activities were brought to life by the Disability Services Roaring 20s Soiree committee, for which Williams is extremely grateful.
“Words can’t express how full my heart is,” Williams said. “Thank you to everyone who showed up, helped, and made this dream a reality. We were able to give our guests a glimpse into the lives of our students, to see their experiences, the challenges they face, and?their achievements. It’s not about the disability; it’s about the person. This evening was about inviting the community to recognize that and engage with us.”
