LSC-University Park hosts community heart walk and registration fair Oct. 26

HOUSTON (Oct. 18, 2024) – Lone Star College-University Park (LSC-University Park) is excited to once again serve as the host site for the American Heart Association (AHA) Northwest Harris County (NWHC) Heart Walk on Sat., Oct. 26, 2024, bringing together community members, students, and local organizations for a day of heart health awareness and celebration. This year's event features a lively Fall Fest theme, offering a variety of family-friendly activities and a fundraising goal of $280,000.

“As a campus committed to promoting wellness and community involvement, we are thrilled to host the Heart Walk once again,” said Matthew Dempsey, MS, Ed.D., interim president of LSC-University Park. “This event allows us to engage with the community in a meaningful way while supporting an essential cause that impacts so many lives. Our team takes immense pride in being part of this effort to improve heart health awareness.”

For the ninth consecutive year, LSC-University Park will welcome over 1,000 participants, including students, employees, local hospitals, school districts, businesses, and community organizations. The day promises entertainment, education, and activities for all ages.

       

Laced up for heart health awareness during the kickoff of last year’s American Heart Association Northwest Harris County Heart Walk at LSC-University Park. The 2024 event is set for Oct. 26. The community is invited to take part in the fun and step up for heart health.

The Heart Walk Expo includes a pumpkin patch photo booth, face painters, a Kids’ Zone, inflatables, and a kid and pup costume contest, making it a festive day for all. Attendees can also enjoy heart-healthy vendor booths and giveaways during the lively Expo starting at 8 a.m.

Before the walk, AHA team member and Barre instructor Jolle Turner will lead a pre-walk warm-up to energize participants. Adding to the lively atmosphere, the LSC-University Park Percussion Ensemble will perform an energetic 'Stomp'-inspired set. Klein High School’s Space Force JROTC will present the Color Guard, and LSC-University Park employee Jacelle Ortiz will perform the National Anthem.

The Heart Walk kicks off at 9 a.m. from the Energy and Manufacturing Institute parking lot at LSC-University Park. Attendees should park in Parking Garages 10 and 11. Parking and admission are free.

Community members interested in learning more about LSC-University Park and course offerings can explore the campus’ Innovation Lab inside the Energy & Manufacturing Institute (EMI) during the Heart Walk. Admissions and Advising staff will be available to answer questions and provide a glimpse into the programs and services offered at the campus as part of this special event.

The American Heart Association is celebrating its 100th Anniversary this year. It is the nation’s oldest and largest voluntary organization dedicated to fighting heart disease and stroke. The Heart Walk is a critical part of their efforts to reduce the number of people affected by cardiovascular disease.
