Step up for heart health at Lone Star College-University Park

HOUSTON (Oct. 7, 2024) – Lone Star College-University Park (LSC-University Park) is gearing up to host the American Heart Association (AHA) Northwest Harris County (NWHC) Heart Walk on Sat., Oct. 26, 2024, bringing the community together to raise awareness and support for heart health. The 2024 event introduces an exciting Fall Fest theme, offering fun activities for families and pets, and a fundraising goal of $280,000.

“We are honored to host this event once again and support the mission of the American Heart Association,” said Matthew Dempsey, MS, Ed.D., interim president of LSC-University Park. “This walk not only promotes heart health but brings together a community dedicated to making a real difference in the lives of others. Our employees look forward to this annual event.”

This marks the ninth consecutive year LSC-University Park has hosted the Heart Walk. The event is expected to draw more than 1,000 participants, including students, employees, local hospitals, school districts, businesses, and community organizations. The day promises to be packed with entertainment, education, and activities for all ages.

Laced up and ready, walkers kick off last year’s American Heart Association Northwest Harris County Heart Walk at LSC-University Park. The 2024 event is set for Oct. 26. The community is invited to take part in the fun and step up for heart health.

The Fall Fest will feature a pumpkin patch photo booth, face painters, a Kids’ Zone, inflatables, and a kid and pup costume contest, making it a festive day for all. Attendees can also enjoy heart-healthy vendor booths and giveaways during the lively Expo starting at 8 a.m.

Before the walk, AHA team member and Barre instructor Jolle Turner will lead a pre-walk warm-up to energize participants. The Klein High School Space Force JROTC will present the Color Guard, and LSC-University Park employee Jacelle Ortiz will perform the National Anthem.

The Heart Walk kicks off at 9 a.m. from the Energy and Manufacturing Institute parking lot at LSC-University Park. Attendees should park in Parking Garages 10 and 11. Parking and admission is free.

Heart disease and stroke remain the No. 1 and No. 5 causes of death in the United States. Since the Heart Walk’s inception, mortality rates from heart disease and stroke have decreased by 45%, a testament to the ongoing efforts of the AHA and its supporters.
