LSC-Kingwood teams take 1st and 2nd place in charity spelling bee

Lone Star College-Kingwood dominated at the 15th annual East Montgomery County Rotary Club Spelling Bee, taking 1st and 2nd places in the competition, which took place Thursday, September 12th.

The Academy for Lifelong Learning Word Wizards took the top spot. The team, made up of ALL members Arleen Eledge, Mike Adams, and Dianne Ohnstad, nailed the word “Avoirdupois” with their stellar spelling skills.

“I do enjoy participating in the spelling bee, Eledge said. “It’s a fun, light-hearted evening. It’s a plus that it is also for a good cause.”

“I have participated in the Spelling Bee for seven or eight years, from I believe the second year of its 15-year history, and find it different every time, but always fun and a very worthwhile fundraiser for scholarships,” shared Adams.

Pat Chandler is Director of Workforce Success and the Continuing Education Program. “The Academy for Lifelong Learning Word Wizards Spelling Bee Team has won five of the 15 Rotary Club Spelling Bees—more than any other team! We are so proud of our winning ALL team!”

The second-place team was the “Bard-Bees: To Bee or Not to Bee” - which included LSC-Kingwood staff members Marcy Young (Communications Manager), Charlotte Iserhardt (Academic Support Services Manager), and Brittany Smith (Librarian Associate, Professor).

The event raised more than $9,000 for scholarships. The scholarships are awarded to juniors and seniors from Porter, New Caney, Splendora, and Caney Creek High Schools during the annual College Connections event at LSC-Kingwood in the spring.

Last year, the Rotary awarded 40 scholarships at $250 each as well as about $500 in academic-related door prizes.
