Has the semester already got you stressed? You might want to stop by the new Interfaith & Meditation Space on the Lone Star College-Kingwood campus.
The room provides a relaxing and calming environment for employees and students who wish to utilize it. A Culture Impact Grant funded the project.
Fine Arts Coordinator Mickey Ly, who applied for the grant, says the project was a labor of love.
“Currently, there is no space available on campus for meditation or reflective use,” Ly says. “This space would allow for individuals and small groups to come together in a quiet space for prayer, meditation, and/or reflection throughout the day. The room shall remain religiously neutral, but it will project a feeling of peace for occupants.”
The Interfaith & Meditation Space offers various mindfulness activities, such as coloring books, lavender lotion packs, breathing exercise cards, prayer mats, Zen Garden, free stress balls, and more. There are also certain items that may be checked out in the space such as a meditation audio player.
“The meditation room is a place of peace, a place to leave the stress at the door and welcome in relaxation,” said student Brianna Lozoya. “It’s a great spot to head to when you’ve had a long day and need a mental break.”
Cybersecurity student Yagnesh Ahir agreed. “The meditation room is a place where we can recharge ourselves.”
LSC-Kingwood Dean of Instruction Anne Amis also supported the project.
“When I heard about the interfaith chapel, it certainly spoke to me! I love the idea of a safe space on campus that all our students, faculty, and staff can access, regardless of their own personal faith.”
“The Meditation Room is a comfortable place of peace between the chaos of the day,” shared Maggie Callahan, graphic designer with the Mi Familia, Mi Futuro program. “I love to take a moment out of my schedule to step into the space to relax and breathe.”
The Interfaith & Meditation Space is in APA (Administrative & Performing Arts) Room 203. To reserve the space or items within the room, please contact Mickey Ly at 281-312-8476.
