For many high school seniors, the future can feel like a vast and uncertain landscape. However, for Morgan Whitaker, an unexpected opportunity in an aerospace engineering class transformed her uncertainty into a clear path forward, uncovering a passion for aviation that would shape her destiny.
Whitaker's interest in aviation began at a young age through the Young Eagles program, which provided her with her first discovery flight. This early experience sparked her enthusiasm for flying, leading her to enroll in an aerospace engineering class during high school. In this course, she collaborated with her classmates to build an experimental RV-12 airplane, further solidifying her passion for aviation.
After graduating high school, Whitaker pursued her private pilot’s license through flying lessons with professional instructors. She then enrolled in the Professional Pilot Program at LSC-Conroe Center, which offered her the perfect combination of hands-on training and expert instruction.
Morgan discovered that the program director, John Blum, had acquired the RV-12 airplane she helped build in high school upon joining the program. This aircraft, preserved in its original condition, was a tangible reminder of her educational journey and commitment to aviation.
During her time in the program, Whitaker gained practical experience at both Conroe-North Houston Regional Airport and David Wayne Hooks Memorial Airport, deepening her knowledge of the aviation industry. Another significant moment was her participation in the EAA AirVenture airshow in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, the world’s largest airshow. At this event, she had the opportunity to fly her kit-built airplane. This unforgettable experience not only showcased her skills but also brought her journey full circle, making it a truly special moment.
Upon graduating in Spring 2024 with an Applied Science degree, Morgan now flight instructs holding her Certified Flight Instructor (CFI) and Certified Flight Instructor Instrument (CFII) ratings. In this capacity, she mentors students in the Professional Pilot Program, providing them with the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in their aviation careers.
"Lone Star College has played a huge role in my journey to become a pilot," Whitaker said. "The instructors were incredibly knowledgeable and always willing to help when I needed it. Their guidance made a big difference!"
Morgan Whitaker’s achievements highlight the opportunities available in aviation education through Lone Star College-Conroe Center’s Professional Pilot Program. Additionally, you can explore the Professional Pilot Program at this year's Wings Over Houston Airshow on October 26-27. This event will feature aerial performances, vintage aircraft displays, interactive activities for all ages, and community engagement opportunities.
