Mi, Familia, Mi Futuro hosted its first ever “Pathways to Success” Family Summer Camp last month.

The four-day camp took place June 24th through 27th on the Lone Star College-Kingwood campus.

Mi Familia, Mi Futuro is a grant program designed to remove barriers for students and families as they pursue a higher education.

The camp was for 7th and 8th graders and their families. More than 30 people attended each day.

During the event, the attendees learned about everything from financial planning to college readiness and career exploration.

“I am very grateful,” remarked Virginia Garcia, a parent who attended the camp with her children. “I learned a lot from all the information we received each day. I am now more focused on what we need to start doing to prepare my children for college.”

In one activity, families and students discovered various career opportunities at the college through role-playing scenarios and a mini career fair.

Isabella Lucio is one of the students who attended the camp. She’s an 8th grader in Aldine ISD. “It was helpful to attend the event because there were examples of different career paths, and they showed us how to budget. They also showed us how much cheaper attending LSC first during our college experience would be.”

There were also financial aid and budgeting sessions and games, as well as a vision boards workshop where participants could visualize and set goals in a creative and engaging way.

Firefighters from the Fire Science program provided a glimpse into the life of a firefighter with an interactive demonstration. Those who attended also received a tour of the Health & Science Center, where they got an up-close look at the dental hygiene and nursing programs.

And Honors College students helped guide the families through a scavenger hunt of the campus, showcasing the many resources and opportunities available to them.

“The week was filled with the most amazing experiences for everyone involved,” said Mi Familia, Mi Futuro Manager Imee Villarreal. “The gratitude these families expressed surpassed our expectations. Can’t wait to see the impact this week has on these future Coyotes!”
