Dog Grooming Assistant and Basic Automotive Maintenance for Women

Whether it's learning to groom dogs for a living or having moms and daughters learn about their cars, Lone Star College-North Harris can help. These are just two of the new workforce and leisure learning opportunities offered through the college's continuing education program for summer 2009.

Dog Grooming Assistant is a 40 hour course which is designed for the person with little or no experience in the field. Topics addressed include safety and sanitation, dog restraint, dematting, bathing, drying, brushing, and nail trimming techniques. This course includes hands-on application of skills and techniques at a local dog grooming salon. Classes qualify for 4.0 CEUs and are offered July 7 through Aug. 13, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 6 to 9 p.m. Cost for the course is $249.

Basic Automotive Maintenance for Women is a 12 hour course reviewing basic fundamentals and theory of operation of the modern automobile. The primary purpose is to acquaint the student with the proper periodic service procedures necessary to maintain the automobile in a safe and economical operating condition. In addition service procedures, annual inspection, seasonal preparations, and knowing what engine repair warning signs to recognize will be reviews as well as oil maintenance, oil types, filters, and proper disposal of used oil. Automotive safety inspection of tires, brakes, lights, wipers, fluid levels, etc. will be stressed. Correct procedures for changing a flat tire, tire rotation importance and procedures will be covered in detail. Classes are set for July 14 through Aug. 4, Tuesday evenings, 6 to 9 p.m. Cost for the course is $51/$41.40 for seniors.
