Residents of King’s Colony community in Kingwood, Texas, came together for a transformative event aimed at promoting health awareness and higher education opportunities. Hosted by Consejo de Familias de Texas, in colllaboration with Lone Star Family Health Center and LSC-Kingwood Mi Familia, Mi Futuro, the free public health workshop saw an impressive turnout of more than 20 families.

The event, held at the residence of Gladys Hernandez, a community leader and advocate for education, featured informative sessions on diabetes, interactive workshops, and insightful discussions about the resources available through Lone Star College- Kingwood and its programs.

Hernandez expressed the significance of these workshops, stating, “I see that people didn't know about diseases or what foods they shouldn't eat before. Now that I have a device to check blood pressure, I helped someone who felt very ill. Their blood pressure was very high, and we called an ambulance. I also like to help the community, especially with education. I don't like to see young people dropping out of school. Where there's a will, there's a way, but our community needs information available to them.”

Maria Baños Jordan, founder of Texas Familias Council, emphasized the crucial connection between public health and education, saying, “Caring for public health directly impacts a child’s progress in education. The LSC-Kingwood Mi Familia, Mi Futuro program supports parents and students by prioritizing clear goals in education and empowering families through a nurturing network of community support. I’m extremely thankful to be a part of these efforts alongside Mi Familia, Mi Futuro and Lone Star Family Health Center. We’ve created a trusting pathway that directly connects families with education and healthcare resources, and it’s a beautiful effort.”

The event was attended by representatives from Mi Familia Mi Futuro, Lone Star Family Health Center, and Texas Familias Council, demonstrating a collaborative effort to address the needs of the community comprehensively.

“We're thrilled to see such strong community engagement and participation in this workshop,” remarked Hernandez. “Events like these are crucial in promoting health awareness and providing access to education resources. We are committed to continuing these initiatives to empower families and support their journey toward a brighter future.”

With 16 families represented, the presence of five doctors, and LSC-Kingwood Mi Familia Mi Futuro Representatives Hector Tepo and Imee Villareal, the workshop was a resounding success, marking another step forward in empowering communities through education and health initiatives.
