Nine LSC-Kingwood Music students will join the Kingwood Chorale ensemble to perform on a tour in Ireland. The choir will be touring from May 19th to 28th.
The Kingwood Chorale is an ensemble with The Lake Houston Musical Arts Society and includes members of the community and some LSC-Kingwood students.
Dr. Todd Miller, LSC-Kingwood Music Professor and Chorale Conductor said he is looking forward to the opportunity to perform American choral music in some of Ireland’s great Cathedrals.
“I am particularly excited to share a concert with a local community choir in Waterford,” Dr. Miller shared. “Each ensemble will present music from their country, and at the end of the concert we will all sing two pieces together in a wonderful cultural exchange.”
To help raise funds for the tour, Encore Tours generously donated a free trip to either Paris or London. The LHMAS, with help from Chorale member Margaret Rose Roberto, organized a raffle for the donated trip. The students and Chorale members were able to raise $8,560 to put toward their Ireland tour. Every penny went to the students.
“This has all happened fundamentally because of Dr. Miller's belief in and commitment to his students,” Roberto said. “These young adults will be gaining the incredible educational experience international travel affords due to his efforts. Very few young people get the opportunity in life to travel like this! To learn and safely experience another culture, along with older, often experienced, travelers who are dedicated to their wellbeing, is what Dr. Miller, the LSC Music Department, and LHMAS have created for them.”
LSC-Kingwood music student Julia Garza is one of the students going to Ireland.
“I’m really excited and even more, I’m very grateful. I have a lot of gratitude for the surrounding communities and all of the people in Chorale, because they have just flooded the students with generosity, and they’ve spoiled us. I would have never been able to take a trip like this if it wasn’t for the generosity and care that everyone has shown us.”
Roberto said it’s been a pleasure for the Chorale members to work with the LSC-Kingwood vocal students.
“Everyone was excited to help them realize the dream of this trip. They are an amazing group of talented young people!!! I know they will steal Irish hearts when they perform.”
The winner of the donated trip was chosen during a drawing on the LSC-Kingwood campus. The winner, Maria Godoy, chose to travel to Paris. The trip includes round-trip airfare for two, and three-nights’ accommodations.
When the Kingwood Chorale returns from Ireland, you can see them perform in Kingwood, on June 15th, at 7:30 p.m. at Strawbridge United Methodist Church. You can purchase tickets here.
