How does Lone Star College-CyFair bring the past to life for history students? The History Department hosts David Shi, author of their textbook, who puts the “narrative front and center” March 5.
“While we try to make our classroom curriculum relevant and relatable to our students, it’s not every day they actually get to have historical events in their textbooks brought to life by the author himself,” said LSC-CyFair History Professor Robert O’Brien.
Shi is author of the best-selling “America: A Narrative History” textbook (now in its 12th edition), which is used in more than 800 educational institutions, including LSC-CyFair’s HIST 1301 and HIST 1302 classes.
“Through rich storytelling, colorful biographical sketches, and vivid first-person accounts, Shi captures the dramatic sweep of American history. In Shi’s upcoming ‘Narrative History: Making the Past Come Alive’ presentation, Shi will discuss how this approach makes history relevant and engaging for our students,” said Robert Holmes, also an LSC-CyFair History Professor.
While Shi is Furman University’s President Emeritus and Professor of History, he is also a specialist in intellectual and cultural history who continues to be highly involved with students and instructors alike around the country with “author-in-residence” visits to campuses. In fact, this will be Shi’s second visit to LSC-CyFair.
