A Humble High School student got quite the shock when he learned he won a $1,000 Lone Star College-Kingwood scholarship during a surprise ceremony at the school.

The high school cheerleaders and band members were there to serenade Cory Thomas as he learned he’d won the scholarship. LSC-Kingwood representatives were also on hand to present him with a symbolic check. Even LSC-Kingwood mascot, Cody the Coyote, showed up to congratulate him.

“I was confused, I was very confused, I didn’t know what was going on, I didn’t even know I won it,” Thomas said.

The scholarship was the result of a drawing and was made possible through a partnership between LSC-Kingwood and Humble ISD.

Thomas said his mother is his inspiration. “My mom, she’s been pushing me a lot, she’s always telling me to apply for scholarships, she’s always sending me scholarships, so I’ve been applying.”

“Proud mama moment, very proud, excited, nervous,” Thomas’ mother, Tiffiiany Godley, shared. “I want to see him graduate school. I think that’s what any parent wants; they want to see their child become a productive citizen that can take care of themselves, but most importantly to get the education.”

LSC-Kingwood President Dr. Melissa Gonzalez said helping students achieve their dreams is always the goal. “The number one reason students or families do not attend college, is because of finances, so this allows them not to worry about that at least for a few semesters. Lone Star College is so affordable, you can do at least one semester for a thousand dollars. And we can help them apply for financial aid and other scholarships.”

Thomas is currently a junior. He says he plans to study architecture at LSC-Kingwood. “Next step is college. It’s free money for me to go to college and get a better education.”
