Leadership High School

Leadership High School Application

The application for Leadership High School 2025-2026 will open in July 2025.

What is Leadership High School?

Leadership High School (LHS) is a dynamic leadership development, community awareness and civic engagement program for sophomores and juniors attending public high school in the Lone Star College service area.

LHS is for students seeking the confidence, skills, problem-solving abilities, and connections essential to realizing their leadership potential. Monthly interactive sessions provide a platform for participants to explore best leadership practices, engage in dialogue with community leaders, participate in peer-to-peer learning, and gain personal leadership skills. It offers high school sophomores and juniors the opportunity to become better informed of the critical issues affecting the community where they live and work. The goal of the program is to prepare area youth for responsible citizenship while they develop crucial leadership skills.

This is a community-based program, sponsored by Lone Star College, and offered at no cost to student participants. All program sessions are held at a Lone Star College campus and student participants are responsible for their transportation to and from the session location.

Selected students will be placed in one of the three following groups based on the school district where their public high school is located.

LHS-Montgomery County: Conroe ISD, Magnolia ISD, New Caney ISD, Splendora ISD, and Willis ISD.

LHS-North Houston: Aldine ISD, Humble ISD and Spring ISD.

LHS-NorthwestCypress-Fairbanks ISD, Klein ISD, and Tomball ISD.

Participants are challenged during interactive monthly sessions to examine their own leadership actions and aspirations and to learn first-hand the leadership stories and practices of key decision makers within the region. The program begins in October with an orientation session followed by a leadership skills retreat and continues with monthly sessions through April. Curriculum is based on The Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership in The Student Leadership Challenge by James Kouzes and Barry Posner. The program also provides students with an opportunity to gain an appreciation for giving back through the completion of a community service project.

The program goals are:

  • Develop a fundamental understanding of leadership and the skills manifested in effective leaders
  • Identify personal leadership style and ability
  • Increase understanding of leader's role in the local community
  • Learn how to initiate change in the community
  • Make new acquaintances from the North Houston Region
  • Understand the need for positive student leaders in the community
  • Make personal community service contributions
