Joyce C. Ester, Ph.D. is currently the President of Normandale Community College where she has served since 2014. Normandale Community College is the largest college and third largest institution in the Minnesota State Colleges and University system comprised of 26 colleges and 7 universities. Throughout her tenure Dr. Ester’s success has been attributed to her commitment to the creation of authentic relationships and positive college culture for students and employees. Dr. Ester and her leadership team continue to establish Normandale as a Student-Ready College. With a focus on student and institutional success, Dr. Ester challenges the college to work toward the elimination of educational equity gaps, increase transfer rates, and to become an institutional that is culturally relevant and service oriented.
Dr. Ester’s other senior leadership roles include service as President of Kennedy King College in Chicago, Illinois; Associate Vice President of Student Affairs at Bakersfield College; and Assistant Vice President at Fresno State University. In each of these roles, student success and employee engagement were the driving force for decisions and influenced her leadership strategy. Dr. Ester earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology from Northern Illinois University; a Master of Arts degree in Education from the University of California Santa Barbara; and a Doctorate in Education from the University of California Santa Barbara.
In addition to her academic experiences, Dr. Ester has served on a number of philanthropic and workforce boards. She was appointed by the Governor of Minnesota to serve on the Young Women’s Initiative Executive Council; served on the Board for the Bloomington Chamber; served on the Board for Interfaith Action of Greater St. Paul; and served on the Board of Girls On The Run Twin Cities. Currently, Dr. Ester serves as a member of the Board of Trustee for the Higher Learning Commission (HLC); a member of the Board of Trustees for Gallaudet University; and a member of the Board of Directors for the Bloomington Convention and Visitors Bureau.
