ADA-compliant vehicle

The lack of accessibility transportation for our students requiring wheelchair accommodations has often led to field trip delays and/or cancellations. The TRIO team acknowledged not just the needs of their own campus, but also those of other locations, particularly for accommodating multiple students in wheelchairs who regularly participate in field trips system wide.

The request was presented to the Chancellor’s Office and delegated to the Division of Student Success to execute.

After several dealership searches for a custom outfitted vehicle which met our specifications, we are delighted to announce the acquisition of a brand-new, 8-passenger, ADA-compliant vehicle. This vehicle will play a crucial role in serving the needs of our students and institution, representing a significant investment in accessibility and inclusivity for our campus community.

About the Vehicle

The new ADA-compliant vehicle has been specifically designed to accommodate individuals with disabilities, ensuring all members of our community have equal access to transportation services on campus. This initiative aligns with Goal #2 (G2), focusing on retention, along with our commitment to creating a welcoming and inclusive environment for all students, staff, and visitors.

The vehicle will provide transportation services for students with disabilities, making it easier for them to move around campus and participate in various activities and events.  Additionally, it will support our institution's efforts to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements and promote accessibility and equity in all aspects of campus life.

The eight (8) passenger van, to include 1 driver, 5 passengers, and capacity for 2 students requiring wheelchair accessibility, is on schedule to be delivered to LSC-System Office, The Woodlands, Wednesday, April 24, 2024.  On this date, there will be a live recorded safety training demonstrating the proper operation of the wheelchair lift required to assist our students in need of the service.  The safety video, along with a Job Aid outlining the specific guidelines for reserving the unit will be available May 7, 2024.
