Klein ISD Teachers

As part of a partnership between Lone Star College-University Park and Klein ISD, Klein ISD high school music students are eligible to apply, audition, and enroll in classes that count toward the AA in Music degree and may be used toward a bachelor's degree in music at many institutions. Through this partnership, Klein ISD high school students can:

  • Learn from award-winning music faculty at Lone Star College-University Park
  • Perform with college-level musicians
  • Earn college credit that can be applied toward most associate and bachelor's degree music programs in Texas

Qualifications

To quality for this opportunity, students must be 16 years old and enrolled in their Klein ISD high school ensembles (choir, orchestra, band, etc.). Interested students must be admitted and audition (see below).  

Available Classes

While new courses will be added every year, the following courses are currently available:

Jazz Ensemble (MUEN 1127.6201)
Coming Spring 2025!
This is a full jazz band, including saxes, brass, rhythm section (piano, bass, drums, and guitar). Additional instruments (flute, clarinet, etc.) may also participate.

Symphony Orchestra (MUEN 1123.6201)
Mondays, 6:00 - 9:00 p.m.
Full symphony orchestra, including orchestral strings, winds, brass, and percussion. Directed by Carlos Lara.

UP Chorale (MUEN 1141.6201)
Tuesdays, 6:00 - 9:00 p.m.
Coming Spring 2025!

This Tuesday evening choral ensemble brings together students, faculty, staff, and community members to perform masterworks and vocal chamber music. Directed by Joseph Nizich, MM.

Private Lessons (MUAP Courses)
Private lessons are available in voice, most instruments, and composition. Students must be enrolled in another music course (such as one of the above ensembles) to be eligible to take lessons.

Location

All courses are taught at Lone Star College-University Park, located at 20515 State Hwy. 249, Houston, TX 77070. The campus is located near the intersection of 249 & Louetta and is less than 15 minutes away from all five Klein ISD high school campuses (6-14 minutes with low traffic, according to Google maps). 

Classes will be held in the Visual and Performing Arts (VPA) building or on the first floor of building 12.

Costs

Ensembles and private lessons are available for as little as $111 each for the entire semester (that's less than $9 per private lesson)! Tuition and fees can vary over time, so visit this page for current cost estimates. 

If you need help paying for classes, LSC offers payment plans that will allow you to split your tuition into more manageable installment payments. For students who continue their studies with us after graduating from high school, financial aid and scholarships are also available.

Admission & Enrollment Process

Click on each item below for step-by-step instructions.

Meet with the Dual Credit Counselor at your high school to discuss your interest in the music program. (While these are not dual credit courses, your dual credit counselor will follow the existing enrollment process due to the established partnership between our schools.)

  • Find your dual credit counselor:

Apply to Lone Star College-University Park through Apply Texas. Click here and click "Create Account." Then:
  • Verify your email address.
  • Login.  Then, click on "Create a Profile" and then "Start an Application."
  • Select "Two Year Community College" and then "Lone Star College System."
  • For "Application Type, choose "Dual Credit." 
  • Select the semester in which you'll enroll (for the current semester, choose "Spring 2023")
  • Select "Arts, Humanities, Communication & Design" as your "First Choice School."
  • Select "Associate of Arts" as the "First Choice Major."
  • Fill out the remaining required fields and then submit your application. 
Submit your test scores. If you've taken the STAAR, TSI, PSAT, SAT, or ACT, please provide those scores to your high school dual credit counselor (see above) for submission to Lone Star College.

Submit your meningitis vaccination record/waiver: Visit this site to submit your record of bacterial meningitis vaccination or your waiver at least 2 weeks before your classes begin. (Only required for courses offered at the college campus.)

Audition: For ensembles and private lessons, you're required to audition. You can review audition guidelines and submit an audition video or request an in-person audition at the LSC-UP Auditions Website.

  • Once accepted into a private lesson studio or ensemble, you usually do not need to reaudition in future semesters. 
  • Auditions are not required for MUSI courses, like music theory. MUSI courses will be offered soon!
Submit Your Enrollment Form: Work with your Dual Credit Counselor (see above) to submit your Course Approval and Parental Consent and Waiver for Dual Credit/Exceptional Admission form. If you're approved to enroll after your audition, we'll provide you with the class number and other information you'll need for this form.  Log in to MyLoneStar.
  • After you've applied, you'll receive your acceptance email with your LSC (Lone Star College) student ID.
  • Visit My.LoneStar.edu and click on "Get Email Address."  Fill out the form and click "Submit" to obtain your LSC email address.
  • To create a password, click “Reset Password”, complete the required information with your new LSC email address, and set a password for your account.
  • Log in to My.LoneStar.edu with your new LSC email address and password to view your class schedule, make payments for your classes, check your LSC email, and view all of your LSC related student records.
