Human Services

Career Overview

The Human Services Program offers two tracks to study from:  General Human Services and Substance-Abuse Counseling.  On the General Human Services track, students can pursue the Human Services Certificate (Certificate 1) and the Associate of Applied Sciences (AAS) with a general Human Services concentration.  On the substance-abuse counseling track students can obtain the Basic Chemical Dependency Counseling Certificate (Certificate 1) and the Associate of Applies Sciences (AAS) with the substance-abuse counseling concentration. The Basic Chemical Dependency Counseling Certificate provides the foundational knowledge and skills related to the substance abuse counseling field. The certificate, which also includes the state-mandated 300 hour field practicum, allows graduates to apply with the state of Texas to become Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor (LCDC) Interns. LCDC Interns are permitted to begin working in the substance abuse counseling field in entry-level positions. Completing the second degree offered within this concentration, the Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree, places graduates on the path to become fully licensed at LCDCs once they have completed all of their Intern requirements.
