Program Pathway
These courses are not stand-alone classes and may only be taken by students approved and registered for the Basic Peace Officer Academy. A certificate is awarded following the successful completion of all five courses in the program.
Program Details
The Basic Peace Officer Course provides the skills and competencies that will equip the student for a career as a law enforcement officer. Participants receive classroom instruction designed to prepare each student for the state licensing examination and engage in hands-on training to learn the skills applicable to police work. This course meets Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) requirements for Course #1000736. Students successfully completing the course will be eligible to take the state licensing exam for peace officer. After passing the licensing exam, students are eligible to be employed as a peace officer in Texas.
Eligibility for this program exceeds general college rules for enrollment. Students must be 21 years of age, have a valid driver's license, be a U.S. citizen, and have a high school diploma or GED. Students must also submit to a criminal background check, physical examination, psychological assessment, and drug screening. A more detailed listing of state mandated requirements for peace officer licensing can be found in the Texas Administrative Code, Chapter 217.1
Successful completion of the police academy requires passing the academic, skills training (driving, firearms, defensive tactics, etc.), and physical fitness components of the course.
