Proposed Core Category

Component Area Option (CAO) A  [90]
The Mathematics Curriculum Team representative, Amy Hoherz, has submitted a Core course proposal to add MATH 1324 to the LSC Core in the Component Area Option (CAO) A [90] area.

Application Documents

Course Description

Applications of common algebraic functions, including polynomial, exponential, logarithmic, and rational, to problems in business, economics, and the social sciences are addressed. The applications include mathematics of finance, including simple and compound interest and annuities; systems of linear equations; matrices; linear programming; and probability, including expected value.

Prerequisites

MATH 0310 - Intermediate Algebra (3)  or placement by testing or concurrent enrollment in MATH 0324 - NCBO for Mathematics for Business and Social Science

Student Learning Outcomes

  1. Apply elementary functions, including linear, quadratic, polynomial, rational, logarithmic, and exponential functions to solve real-world problems.
  2. Demonstrate and apply knowledge of the properties of functions, including domain and range, to solve problems for piecewise-defined, polynomial, rational, radical, exponential, and logarithmic functions.
  3. Solve mathematics of finance problems, including the computation of interest, annuities, and amortization of loans.
  4. Apply basic matrix operations, including linear programming methods, to solve application problems.
  5. Demonstrate fundamental probability techniques and application of those techniques, including expected value, to solve problems.
  6. Apply matrix skills and probability analyses to model applications to solve real-world problems.
