LSC-Tomball Pharmacy IV Sterile Compounding Certification Course

The Lone Star College-Tomball CPE program offers sterile compounding certification in a home study/live workshop format that fulfills continuing education (CE) requirements for pharmacists and certified pharmacy technicians.  Please note there are a limited number of seats for these courses. Choose one session from the options below. All applicants must be a Certified Pharmacy Technician or Pharmacist in order to participate in this course.

Dates: 

February 2025  - The February course is full

  • Students will complete two weeks of online course work during the first two weeks in February.  Students will then complete the hands-on lab portion on February 18, 20, 25 and 27.  Lab times on these dates will be 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. **Attendance at all four lab dates/times is mandatoryIn addition to labs, process validations as scheduled are required for successful completion of the course.

March 2025 

  • Students will complete two weeks of online course work during the first two weeks in March.  Students will then complete the hands-on lab portion on March 18, 20, 25 and 27.  Lab times on these dates will be 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. **Attendance at all four lab dates/times is mandatoryIn addition to labs, process validations as scheduled are required for successful completion of the course.

May 2025 

  • Students will complete two weeks of online course work during the first two weeks in May.  Students will then complete the hands-on lab portion on May 20, 22, 27 and 29.  Lab times on these dates will be 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. **Attendance at all four lab dates/times is mandatoryIn addition to labs, process validations as scheduled are required for successful completion of the course.

**Report to classroom 316 each of the dates above at 4:30 for a recap and overview.  Students will then move to the Pharmacy lab room 323.

  • The CPE Activity costs $535 plus the cost of the textbook. 
  • Textbook required is Mosby's Sterile Compounding for Pharmacy Technicians (ISBN 8220121446828) by Karen Davis, second edition.

Students for this course must be either a registered pharmacist or a certified pharmacy technician. You will be required to enter your TSBP numberNABP number and the month and day of your birth (no year) when completing the online application.  This information is a requirement to receive ACPE CPE for the IV Sterile Compounding Certification course.

CPE Requirements for Credit:

To receive credit for the course the participant must provide the student registration information form which includes NABP # and month/day date of birth, documentation of required training hours and CPE evaluation form.  The participant will be required to complete process validations (with 100% compliance to sterile compounding and aseptic technique principles) in addition to course quizzes, and comprehensive exam (with a grade greater than or equal to 75%).

Course Objectives:

At the completion of this activity, the Pharmacist will be able to:

  • List the conditions and practices outlined in USP Chapter <797> to prevent contamination of compounded sterile preparations (CSPs).
  • State requirements for the environment and for personnel gowning and garbing required by USP Chapter <797> for individuals compounding sterile preparations.
  • Define medical and pharmacy terminology and abbreviations used in sterile compounding.
  • Compare the various calculation methods that are appropriate for specific sterile compounding scenarios.
  • Distinguish between the various dosage calculation methods used in the preparation of CSPs.
  • Appraise the application of pharmacy math and aseptic technique principals as applied to various CSP procedures.
  • Evaluate USP <797> principles related to sterile compounding and aseptic technique.
  • Employ various pharmaceutical calculation methods used in sterile compounding.
  • Assemble various compounded sterile preparations.
  • Assess compliance with fundamental aseptic technique requirements during process validation procedures.

At the completion of this activity, the Pharmacy Technician will be able to:

  • State requirements for the environment and for personnel gowning and garbing required by USP Chapter <797> for individuals compounding sterile preparations.
  • Identify medical and pharmacy terminology and abbreviations used in sterile compounding.
  • List the various calculation methods that are appropriate for specific sterile compounding scenarios.
  • Solve equations using the basic dosage calculation, ratio-proportion, and dimensional analysis in the preparation of CSPs.
  • Apply pharmacy math and aseptic technique principals to CSP procedures.
  • Describe USP <797> principles related to sterile compounding and aseptic technique.
  • Use appropriate pharmaceutical calculation methods in sterile compounding scenarios.
  • Assemble various compounded sterile preparations.
  • Demonstrate compliance with fundamental aseptic technique requirements during process validation procedures.
