Prior Learning Assessment
Students who have completed a high school pharmacy program, other outside pharmacy technology program, or are working as a pharmacy technician AND have passed the PTCB or ExCPT exam AND are fully certified (completed the upgrade with Texas State Board of Pharmacy from technician trainee to pharmacy technician), can apply to the LSC-Tomball Pharmacy Technology program and receive PLA (prior learning assessment) for the entire first semester of courses listed above as well as the Pharmacy Technician Certificate Review course. This means these students can receive an exemption from taking the first semester courses (and review course) saving the student time and money.
Eligible students can then start the Pharmacy Technology program second semester courses listed above. This includes the ACPE sterile compounding certification course (pharmacy technicians MUST have this certification to work in a hospital pharmacy and/or specialty compounding pharmacy). If the student has worked for a minimum of 500 hours as a full time pharmacy technician within the last two years, they can also apply for PLA/exemption for a clinical site (PHRA 1361 or PHRA 2361). The student will need to provide a letter from their employer with the number of hours they have worked and a letter of recommendation from a pharmacist with whom they have worked and complete the PLA application.
Students can then graduate with their pharmacy certificate and sterile compounding certification. Many students decide to continue for their Associate in Pharmacy Management degree to have the ability to demand more pay and make themselves more marketable for advanced pharmacy job placement.
