Changing the Approach to Summative Assessments in the Online Environment by Using Real-Time Data

Session Description: It can be challenging to maintain academic integrity for summative assessments in online courses. For this reason, the way we assess learning in an online class may need to be different from a face-to-face class. One way to overcome this is to have students work at the apply level of Bloom's taxonomy by using real-time data in the GIS (Geographic Information Systems) online platform. Lone Star has licenses for GIS online, so anyone can use it, and the types of data out there cover all the disciplines. Data such as voting districts, median incomes, county health rankings, neighborhood crime rankings, or Civil War battle sites are all accessible via maps online. As an example, Environmental Geology students choose a city from anywhere in the world. Then rather than taking exams, they apply what they have learned to their city by looking at different datasets pertaining to their city in a series of City Assessments throughout the semester.

Presenter Bio: Dr. Bryn Benford is a Geology Professor at Lone Star – University Park. In her classes, she wants students to develop the skills for how to do geology rather than focusing on the "what" of geology. She wants her students to improve their critical-thinking skills and to understand how to apply what they are learning to their lives and their surroundings.
