Parents and Legal Guardians
Parents & Legal Guardians
SOAR is here to help parents and students through the admissions process! Check out these videos on how to get started:
FERPA State Law
An important note for parents/legal guardians is the FERPA state law (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act), established to protect student privacy and provide an option for students to grant access to their parents/legal guardians.
Once a student enrolls in college at any age, the rights under FERPA transfer from the parents to the student, which means our staff and faculty keep student information confidential. This includes, but is not limited to, grades, tuition statements, making a payment, class schedule, etc.
FAQ: Does this apply if I am paying for my student to go to college?
Answer: Yes. We (college staff) want to help you, but we are obligated to abide by the law. We can provide you with general college information, but not specific information without a signed authorization from the student.
Authorization to Release Educational Records
A student may voluntarily elect to allow access to student information to a parent or legal guardian. The student must fill out the form to include the name(s) of individuals granted permission, sign, and submit the form to the Admissions office.
