Property Insurance Claims
Below is a guide from the Lone Star College Office of the General Counsel compiled with helpful tips and
information to assist you and your families as you navigate property claims in the days and months ahead.
-
Document Damage. Perform a thorough inspection of your home, make a list and take pictures and videos of all damage sustained, regardless of severity.
-
Mitigate Losses. Secure broken windows, cover any portions of the home that are exposed to the elements, and make temporary repairs that are necessary for safety or to prevent further damage.
-
Review your policy. Review your insurance policy carefully to understand your coverage and any claim filing requirements.
-
File Promptly. Report property damage to your insurance company as soon as possible. Many
policies have claim filing time limits that could affect your claim if you do not act quickly. Insurance companies may have high claims volume, so be sure to monitor your claim and follow up regularly.-
Keep a record of everyone with whom you speak and be ready to answer questions about the damage.
-
Ask about an advance payment if you need immediate assistance.
-
Ask about living expenses if you are unable to live in your home due to damage the hurricane caused.
-
-
Record Expenses. Keep a record of all expenses and save receipts for all costs incurred, including those for temporary repairs and living expenses.
-
Coordinate Home Inspection. Be available and on-site when your insurance adjuster performs your home inspection. This is important to ensure all damage is recorded. Provide the adjuster with copies of any documentation you have, including estimates and receipts. Be sure to notify your adjuster as soon as possible if you discover any additional damage after your inspection.
-
Home Repairs. Get multiple bids from contractors and compare them with your adjuster’s report before settling your claim.
