Lone Star College-Montgomery Presents Student-Directed Actors’ Workshop Performance Waiting by Ethan Coen

Waiting by Ethan Coen is the second student-directed Actors Workshop of the 2009-2010 season andwill be performed on Thursday, February 18, and Friday, February 19, at 7:30 p.m.; as well as on Saturday, February 20, at both 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. All performances will take place at Lone Star College-Montgomery in the performing arts lab (Temporary Building 101).

In Waiting, a man faces an uncertain future in an uncertain location that seems to be some kind of waiting room. The anxiety and despair hark back to dramas of the fifties in the style of Sartre, Beckett, and Pinter. Clever, provocative, and as engaging as the best fiction, these plays showcase yet another talent of one of the country’s most celebrated contemporary writers.

The Actors Workshop series allow students to minimize the peripherals of sets, costumes, and lighting in order to concentrate on character development. Chase Waites, associate theatre professor at LSC-Montgomery, has been working with a variety of students to take on substantially larger roles within the workshop productions.

Waiting is being produced entirely by students, most notably the theatre honors fraternity, Delta Psi Omega, which has taken on the task of producing the shows performed in The Actors Workshop series.

In addition to the short play, there will be three sets of scenes performed by the students who have been nominated for the Irene Ryan Acting Scholarship competition that takes place at the Kennedy Center American College Region 6 Theatre Festival in Amarillo on February 23-27. Each nominated student will perform two duet scenes and a monologue.

“We are excited to see the students take the reins of the department and produce their own work,” said Waites.

The performances are designated as “pay what you will,” with all contributions supporting the theatre scholarship and program fund. Tickets are available online, along with recommended donation levels.

Tickets can also be reserved by contacting Denise Meyers, program coordinator for theatre/fine arts division, at (936) 273-7021 or denise.meyers@LoneStar.edu.
