What is Academic Advising?

In your academic advising appointments, you will learn many things from your advisor that will support your academic and career success. The following is an overview of what you will be able to accomplish through engaging regularly with your advisor:

  • You will be able to make critical decisions in program choice.
  • You will be able to apply knowledge of academic degree requirements and course sequencing.
  • You will be able to identify the transfer requirements and deadlines for the college/university you wish to transfer to.
  • You will be able to find the resources available to explore the connection between your academic program and career choice.

Should I talk to an Advisor or Counselor?

At every Lone Star College campus, students can access support from academic advisors and counselors. Academic advisors help with degree planning and building a schedule that works for you. If you are unsure whether to speak to an advisor or counselor about your academic, career, or disability concerns, read more about what each one can help you with on our Advisor or Counselor resources page.

When Should You Make an Appointment?

Consider scheduling a meeting if:

  • You want to discuss courses to stay on track with your degree plan.
  • Your cumulative GPA is at risk of falling below 2.0.
  • You're thinking about changing your major or program of study.
  • You're facing academic or personal challenges and need someone to talk to.
  • You're considering dropping a course and want to understand how it might impact your academic plan.
