“The Wait of History: Why the Palestinian-Israeli Conflict Can't Find a (Re)solution"
12 - 1:30 p.m.
Building H, Music Recital Hall
It is now 100 years after Great Britain’s Balfour Declaration calling for a Jewish homeland that soon set off Arab attacks against Jewish immigrant-settlers in Palestine, and 50 years since the 6-Day War in which the State of Israel captured additional territories in the West Bank, Gaza, and Golan Heights. Unfortunately, despite numerous attempts at resolving the issues, we are no closer to any resolution – thus currently making the Palestinian-Israeli clash the world’s longest-running, international-territorial conflict.
This lecture will first briefly provide some background regarding the 1917 and 1967 events & consequences, and then focus on an important factor underlying the lack of resolution of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, one that is hardly ever noted in this context: “historical memory”. In both religions involved here – Moslem and Jewish – the past is not merely a matter of “academic history” but rather a guidepost for present and future national behavior. It is this “political psychology” element that might be the most formidable obstacle to achieving a lasting, peaceful settlement of the conflict.
