Nancy Shortsleeve has dedicated herself to her Lake Houston area community for more than 25 years. The LSC Foundation board member, donor, and volunteer has steadfastly served because she sees the value Lone Star College provides to her community. "Through the years I have come to know and appreciate the value and importance of having quality education opportunities close to home in the form of Community College," she said.
As the owner of LogoStuff, Inc., Nancy first became involved in the Lake Houston area professional community through the chamber of commerce and met Chancellor Dr. Head when he was president of LSC-Kingwood. Nancy also learned more about the Foundation through fellow Kingwood resident and business owner Carl Joiner, a longtime LSC Foundation board member and past chair. "I met Carl Joiner many years ago and immediately identified him as a mentor. Carl's commitment to the Foundation is inspiring and led me to further explore and understand what I could do to support the organization," said Shortsleeve.
She continued, "I learned that the Foundation wanted to have a stronger presence in the communities where the campuses are located. I felt that I might be able to connect the Foundation to the many friends and contacts that I have gained over the years through business and community involvement."
Nancy and her husband Kenny have also shown their commitment by funding endowed scholarships, which award scholarships to deserving LSC students in perpetuity. "I grew up in a family that held education in the highest regard. Not attending college was not an option in my family. Thanks to my dad's careful planning and my mother's frugal management of household funds, my three siblings and I graduated from college without debt or student loans. The best way I know to honor the sacrifices my parents made for my education is to pay it forward. The Foundation is able to leverage my resources to help more students over a longer period of time than I would be able to do on my own," she said.
Why should someone consider supporting LSC Foundation? Nancy replied, "Attending the scholarship reception event every year (pre-COVID) is a humble reminder about why we do what we do. Listening to the hardships and barriers that students have overcome to get an education is unfathomable to me. I always leave there inspired to do more.
