The Chesmar Foundation has donated over $600,000 through Lone Star College Foundation to help LSC students become trained and compassionate nurses. The scholarships cover the nursing students' total program costs, helping to alleviate financial concerns.
"Lone Star College Foundation is grateful to our community partners who generously support students in achieving their educational and career goals," said Nicole Robinson Gauthier, CFRE, LSC Foundation executive director. "The Chesmar Foundation's incredible donation clears a path for students to earn their nursing degree without incurring heavy debt."
Kristina Straps, an LSC-Kingwood nursing student and Chesmar Foundation scholarship recipient, has always had a deep-rooted desire to positively impact in others' lives. She believes the opportunity to provide comfort, support and healing to patients during their most vulnerable moments is incredibly fulfilling.
"The dynamic nature of the nursing profession and its endless opportunities for learning and growth excites me and drives my belief that every individual deserves quality care and support," said Straps. "Scholarships from organizations like The Chesmar Foundation will go a long way toward me being an advocate for patients and contributing to the health and well-being of my community."
The Chesmar Foundation began awarding scholarships through LSC Foundation in 2023 and has assisted 130 LSC nursing students pay for tuition, books and fees, plus license exam fees to date. Ideal applicants must have at least a 3.0 GPA, be enrolled in a nursing program and demonstrate a financial need. Additional preferences include students working in the medical field while attending school and those who perform community service.
"Chesmar Foundation understands that society benefits from talented, competent and compassionate nurses, and we are committed to helping students focus on their education instead of the associated costs," said Don Klein, Chesmar Foundation president. "We believe helping students offset their higher educational costs will allow them to achieve their educational and career goals, thus producing high-achieving medical professionals."
As for Straps, she will graduate from LSC-Kingwood with an associate degree in nursing (ADN) in spring 2026. The future nurse plans to pursue a BSN degree to enhance her skills and prepare for advanced career opportunities, including leadership and specialized roles in the health care industry.
