• A grievance is defined as an unresolved problem that a student has which deals specifically with a concern regarding any aspect of the instructional programs or the campus environment
  • An appeal is defined as a formal request by a student for an investigation of matters surrounding a complaint and an objective hearing by one or more college representatives who have the authority to review and affirm or overturn a given decision.
  • An administrator is any college employee so designated by the president.

Resolve Issues with Faculty

This is the procedure to follow to resolve an issue with a faculty member:

Whenever possible, students should attempt to resolve problems regarding a faculty member directly with the faculty member in question. Students wishing to petition for a grade change, file and academic appeal or find a harassment complaint should follow the steps detailed in those sections of this handbook. The following steps should be followed by the students wishing to address an issue with a faculty member:

  1. Discuss the issue directly with the faculty member in question. If unsatisfied with the resolutions offered by the faculty member, then
  2. Contact the Division Office or Center Director at the college. In some cases, the division office or the Student Service Office may refer the student to other college officials who can best address the nature of the issue. If still unsatisfied with the resolution after talking with the dean or director, then
  3. Prepare a written statement to be reviewed by the Chief Academic Officer at the college. The Student Service Officer can assist with locating the Chief Academic Officer who will then investigate the problem along with the resolutions previously offered. The Chief Academic Officer may offer a different resolution or concur with the previous resolutions. The Chief Academic Officer’s decision is final.

Grievance & Appeals Process

  1. The student may be told what behavior is expected of him/her.
  2. An individual conference may be scheduled with the student who persists in disrupting the class. The student may be told that dismissal from the class for an indefinite time may result if the disruptive activity does not stop immediately. The instructor may also confer with a supervisor or administrator if the disruptive behavior persists.
  3. The instructor or any college employee should refer unresolved, serious, and/or sensitive problems to the vice president for student development.
  4. A seriously disruptive student may be required to leave a
    classroom or any other campus area and not return until he
    or she has met with a designated administrator to resolve the problem.
  5. An urgent disruptive situation should be reported immediately to a college vice president or, in his or her absence, dean, police officer, or other administrator on duty.
  6. The disciplinary action taken by the vice president or administrator may include, but is not limited to, the following:
    • Dismissal for an indefinite period of time from an individual class;
    • Suspension from any campus of Lone Star College System for one or more semesters;
    • Limited suspension from a specific campus or college activity
  7. Students have the right to appeal a decision in a disciplinary case to the Student Disciplinary Committee and may do so by submitting a written request to the CSAO within ten (10) days of notification of the disciplinary sanction
