Classroom Emergency
EMERGENCY PROCEDURES
  • Fire:
    • Pull the fire alarm and evacuate the area immediately.
  • Chemical spill:
    • That cannot be handled by the individual in the laboratory, evacuate the area and call the Lab Manager or Facilities Department for help.
  • Chemical exposure and accidents requiring medical assistance:
    • Call X9-911 or LSCS Police (x5911) from a campus phone.
    • From any other phone call 9-1-1, then (281) 290-5911

Classroom Emergency Procedures Guidelines

  1. Identify and point out the locations of:
    1. Exits
    2. Fire extinguisher(s)
    3. Pull stations (primarily near exits)
    4. Telephone(s)
    5. Electrical breaker panels and emergency on/off switches (if applicable)
    6. Emergency eyewash stations and safety shower (if applicable)
    7. Designated emergency gathering point (as denoted on Emergency Evacuation Maps in the classrooms)
    8. Who to call for emergencies
    9. Where to locate emergency information on-line.
  2. If you discover a fire:
    1. Sound the alarm manually if it has not already been activated
    2. Call X5911 or (281) 290-5911 [from any campus phone] for LSCS Police Dispatch or 9-1-1 from any telephone
    3. Let the dispatcher know which LSCS campus you are calling from
    4. Evacuate to a safe area immediately
    5. Only use a fire extinguisher if:
      1. You are trained and competent in its use
      2. The fire can be controlled or extinguished using this method.
      3. You can do so without putting yourself or anyone else at risk.
      4. You can keep yourself between the exit and the fire.
    6. The activation of a pull station should be followed with a call to 9-1-1 from a safe location.
    7. When calling 911 have the following information available:
      1. Building name and address or closest intersection
      2. Room number
      3. Specify whether you need police, medical or fire assistance
      4. Type of emergency, e.g., injury, chemical release, or fire
  3. If the fire alarm sounds:
    1. Stop what you are doing
    2. Secure any dangerous activity quickly
    3. Assist persons with special needs
    4. Leave the building immediately by the nearest and safest exit
    5. Do not use the elevators
    6. Do not re-enter the building if the alarm stops; wait until the "All Clear" has been given by the local fire department or LSCS Police Department.
  4. If the emergency involves an unconscious or injured person:
    1. Ensure there is no danger to yourself or the victim;
    2. Do not move the victim unless their life is endangered by staying in the current location;
    3. Call 9-1-1, then X5911, and remain with victim until help arrives.
    4. Report the events of the emergency to your supervisor as soon as you can do so safely
