College Partners with Deerwood Community, Texas Familias Council to Make Brighter Holiday
Published on: January 03, 2014
Lone Star College-Montgomery faculty, staff and students recently partnered with the Texas Familias Council (TFC) to provide a brighter Christmas to the residents of the Deerwood community near Conroe.
Just prior to the college’s winter break, dozens of college volunteers bought supplies and household items, packaged them, loaded a delivery truck, and participated in the event itself at Deerwood.
“I am proud of the Deerwood community, which has made great strides in improving their own situation,” said Becky Gustamante, academic dean at LSC-Montgomery and coordinator of the college’s holiday efforts with Deerwood and TFC. “I firmly believe that when we provide them with the tools and let them flourish, it is a win-win situation. I am ecstatic about our efforts to guide Deerwood residents toward a better life.”
According to Maria Jordan, president and founder of TFC, the annual event included gift/supply boxes for approximately 70 families, visits with Santa, and free flu shots for more than 100 residents.
“I'm very thankful to the college's faculty and students for helping bring some joy to our families. Each box was carefully filled with basic needs supplies that the students and staff gathered. We are very grateful for our ongoing partnership with LSC-Montgomery, and know that our community will be truly enriched by these efforts.”
LSC-Montgomery is located at 3200 College Park Drive, one-half mile west of Interstate 45, between Conroe and The Woodlands. For more information about the college, call 936.273.7000, or visit www.LoneStar.edu/montgomery
