Randy Bates became a member of the Board of trustees of the Lone Star College System in August 1991. He subsequently was elected as Vice Chair from 1995-1996 and was elected Chair in 1997, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010.
Bates practices law with the firm he founded Bates & Coleman, PC and specializes in public finance law.
Bates received a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Ohio State University and earned his Juris Doctor from Thurgood Marshall School of Law at Texas Southern University. He is licensed to practice law in the states of Texas and Missouri.
He is a charter member of the 100 Black Men of Metropolitan Houston, Inc., Who’s Who in Black Houston and has served on numerous boards of directors. Bates was named “Outstanding Texan” in the field of Education by the Texas Legislative Black Caucus and received the Mayor’s Distinguished Award by the city of El Paso, Texas. Bates is a life member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. and currently serves as Grand Polemarch, the highest officer in the fraternity.
