LSC-Kingwood to Produce an Original Play

“Corner Lot” will debut on LSC-Kingwood’s stage Nov. 13-16 at 7:30 p.m. and Nov. 16-17 at 2 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center Black Box.Lone Star College-Kingwood’s Theatre Department will produce an original drama production written by a Texas playwright.

Jackie Rosenfeld’s work, “Corner Lot” will debut on LSC-Kingwood’s stage Nov. 13-16 at 7:30 p.m. and Nov. 16-17 at 2 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center Black Box. Rosenfeld is a senior lecturer at Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches. This is the first time that this play will be produced.

“We haven’t produced an original full-length work since fall 2005,” said Eric C. Skiles, artistic director of theatre. “It was time to reach out to our talented local playwrights and find a new play to produce.”

“Corner Lot” depicts the lives of a young couple, Nick and Lauren, who are experiencing a culture shock as they attempt to sell Nick’s grandfather’s house in a small West Texas town. While trying to sell the house, they discover a small memorial or Descanso, in the corner of the yard. This production takes a close look at doing the right thing even when doing the right thing is unpopular.

“This is a great example of modern American realism. The characters are very engaging and the story is quite remarkable,” Skiles said. “This is the type of play that shows us how a simple thing can redirect our entire lives.”

The cast is comprised of LSC-Kingwood students: Carl Hailey as Nick; Hailey Orman playing Lauren; Jessy Luan Valladares Solorzano as Clementina; and Thomas Madison playing Rusty. The production team includes Skiles, director; Kalliope P. Vlahos, designer; Jordan Everett, stage manager; Natalie Jinks, sound technician; Garrett Tatum, light technician; and Corey Bischalaney, backstage crew.

“Corner Lot” tickets are $12 for general admission, $10 for senior citizens age 55 and older, and $5 for students. Ticket reservations are strongly recommended.  There is no late seating for the Black Box Theatre. For more information, call 281-312-1532 or email KWBox@LoneStar.edu.
