LSC-Tomball Medical Administrative Services Department

A professional or medical administrative assistant is responsible for a variety of administrative and clerical duties that are needed to run and maintain an office efficiently. They set appointments, give information to callers, organize and maintain files, complete forms, and operate office equipment. They use personal computers to run a spreadsheet, do word processing, database management, desktop publishing, and other specialized office programs. In the medical office, knowledge of medical terminology, billing and insurance, and the ethics surrounding patient rights and confidentiality are also needed.

Earnings

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Medical Assistant positions will increase 59% from 2002 to 2012. [1] Other medical office positions are also expected to increase dramatically during that time frame. Based on a survey of the Tomball area, in 2004, the average annual salary for a Receptionist is $24,143 and for a Medical Billing Clerk is $26,860. Salaries vary a great deal depending upon the type of organization, geographical area, differences in skills needed, experience, education, and level of responsibility, but many range from $18,800 to $34,900.
