Purpose of the Placement Test
The State of Texas (PDF) requiresthat all students who attend a public institution of Higher Education be assessed in the areas of Reading, Writing and Mathematics. The Texas Success Initiative (TSI) is a state legislated program designed to improve student success in college.
TSI requires student assessment, an individualized learning plan for students whose skills are not at college level, a minimum college readiness state standard, the institution to report the success of the students, and effectiveness of the institutions developmental education program. Each institution will be responsible for the success of its students.
The purpose of placement testing is to determine your current level of skills and knowledge in reading, writing and math. This information determines the most appropriate courses for your enrollment.
Who Has to Take the Placement Test
All students, unless considered TSI Complete, must take a complete assessment (COMPASS or ACCUPLACER) prior to enrolling at LSCS. Enrollment in most college-level courses requires scores high enough to place into the college-level course or students will need to complete all appropriate developmental coursework with a “C” or better. For more information about standards for TSI complete and placement test scores, please review pages 42-44 of the LSCS Catalog.
