The parking garage will create approximately 1,000 new parking spaces and be completed by August of 2010.

Participating in the ceremony were college administrators, including Dr. Austin Lane, president of LSC-Montgomery, as well as representatives from the architectural firm Harrison Kornberg; general contractor Johnson Group USA; construction firm Diggs Construction; and project management firm Jones Lang LaSalle. Additionally, Chris Baker, president of the LSC-Montgomery Student Government Association (SGA), participated.

The parking garage will be constructed on the west side of campus, between the tennis courts and existing Parking Lot 8. In addition to 989 parking spaces, which is a 50 percent increase in the existing number of spaces, the first level of the garage will house the college’s police department.

In addition to breaking ground on the garage, representatives from Harrison Kornberg unveiled a rendering of the parking garage, which will feature energy-efficient lighting throughout the building. The $10.2 million project is part of the college’s construction resulting from the successful bond referendum in May 2008.

“I don’t need to say how much this parking garage is needed,” said Dr. Lane. “When this garage opens next year, the parking inconveniences that we’ve experienced over the past few years will be a distant memory. This garage, along with the other new buildings that are coming, are truly needed to serve the growing needs of our community.”

Added LSC-Montgomery student and SGA president Chris Baker: “On behalf of all students, I’m very proud to be a part of the college during such an historic time of growth and excitement. I’m also glad to know that parking on this campus, including in the new parking garage, is--and will be--free.”
